Vetus Sterngear

All Vetus propeller shafts are made of Duplex 1-4462.

As far as corrosion resistance is concerned, Duplex 1-4462 is equivalent to stainless steel, type AISI 316. However, it has a tensile strength which is about 30% higher and a hardness of about 40% higher then AISI 316. It is exactly this high degree of hardness which gives Duplex 1-4462 its excellent running properties in bearings. Moreover, it offers much more resistance against wear and tear in the way of bearings and seals. (Please note that older Vetus shafts were fabricated from Remanit 4418 which had different comparisons with AISI 316)

A Vetus propeller-shaft assembly consists of:

A tapered, straightened and polished Duplex 1-4462 stainless steel propeller shaft with keyway, thread, lock washer, key and propeller nut with integrated zinc anode. All shaft tapers and keyways have dimensions in accordance with ISO 4566 (1:10 taper)
Outer bearing with incorporated rubber bearing soldered to bronze stern tube
Mounting flange for outer bearing
Mounting flange for stern tube
Flexible stuffing box with rubber sleeve for shaft

Shaft assemblies with dual shaft seal (25/30mm)

For use with less powerful engines, Vetus have designed and developed a shaft assembly - with shaft diameters of 25 mm or 30mm - which can be installed with a minimum of fuss. Machining, threading and keyway cutting have all been taken care of. In addition, these shaft assemblies protect the environment: lubrication is ensured by means of raw water, without use of grease or oil. The stern tube is provided with a dual shaft seal, eliminating the need for a stuffing box. The stern tube may be supplied in either bronze or GRP.

Shaft assemblies with dual shaft seal (35/40/45/50mm)

These assemblies have bronze stern tubes for installation into GRP vessels and have a stern mounting flange. The stern tube is provided with a dual shaft seal and lubrication is ensured by means of raw water, without use of grease or oil. These are supplied in bronze.

These assemblies have steel stern tubes for installation into steel vessels and may be welded into place. The stern tube is provided with a dual shaft seal and lubrication is ensured by means of raw water, without use of grease or oil.

Propellers

A ship's propeller is possibly the most important component of a motorboat. Vetus make good use of a specially developed computer programme which ensures the determination of the exactly right propeller for your boat, with the aid of some (correct!) inormation which is required from the customer.

Three types of managnese-bronze propeller are available:

P3B: 3-blade suitable for displacement craft with speeds of up to 10 knots
P3C: 3-blade suitable for faster craft
P4E: 4-blade suitable for semi-planing boats with speeds of more than 16 knots
